Was surfing around the net and came across this statement by a dealer that has been in are area for over 20 yrs. And has a Fair-Good reputation as well. It was a shock to me as to what they recommended for gallons per Koi  It started out good then as I read down it got ..............well scary.

Quote:
For KOI, we recommend having at least 1000 gallons, and a pond with at least a 2 1/2 foot depth. In Japan, they recommend having 1000 gallons for EACH KOI! But we think having at least 1000 gallons for the first Koi, and an additional 100 gallons for each additional Koi, should provide enough space for your pets. If you plan on having ANY fish or aquatic life, you MUST have a proper pump and filter for your animals to survive!

I can say the first part 1000 per Koi is a great figure...but to say after that ONLY 100 gals per Koi?? I feel that min would be around 3-500 gals and if showing Koi the best would be 1000 per Koi. So if you have 10 Koi@18" then only need 1900 gals. Ummmmm wouldn't 5500 gals or more make more sence

Its scary what folks market now a days

Mark I think the difference is a "RETAILER" talking and not a hobbiest or a professional" Not putting down the retailer, but Dave's article about "Preditory Pond Building" was based on what the retail market is doing. Not all, but most.

While we can not have too much pond volume from the koi perspective, we humans can only build ponds so large. So maximum growth indeed allow 1,000 gallons per koi. More realistic for most hobbyists would be 500 gallons per koi. Always try to have at least 250 gallons per koi.

Remember they may only be 4" now....but in a few years they can 24-36" and need lots more room, filtraiton, and aeration.

Another way to look at stocking level is gallons per pound of koi.

Low stocking level : >100 gallons per lb of koi

Medium stocking level: ~50 gallons per lb of koi

High stocking level: <25 or less gallons per lb of koi

Well the more Koi you can stock in your pond, the more KOI he/retailer will sell.

"CONSUMER BEWARE"

Thankfully the IPPCA message board is here for consumers to get better information from PROFESSIONALS, and not having to take JUST the retailers word for it.

I have a old customer (8 to 10 years ago...plus elderly in age) in Gastonia NC that had 57 large beautiful Koi....in about 3,500 gallons of water (with a sock around his pump which he had to clean daily)! I enlarged his pond to between 4 and 5,000 gallons and put in a large Aquascape skimmer and biological filter box. He had a 5,600 gph pump already....and I know that when it went bad one summer he was in a panic to get a new one going....a little squirting statue kept the fish from being dead while he rounded up another pump.
